The latest beneficiaries of Renfrew’s tough times are the Valley Division arch-rival Arnprior Packers, and Metcalfe Jets of the Metro loop, both of whom won by the regular 6-4 scores.
ARNPRIOR 6, WOLVES 4
It was like two different games Friday night at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre.
For a period and a half, the Wolves were full value for a 3-2 lead they earned in the opening period, and seemed poised to maintain it.
But then came the lineup to the sin bin.
The Wolves took three consecutive penalties and four of the next five.
Although they killed off the first two, momentum was beginning to swing.
The Packers pulled even on the third powerplay, and took the lead for good on a 4-on-4 created by Renfrew’s fourth penalty of the 10-minute sequence.
One never really got the sense that the Wolves would draw even in the third period, although a quick whistle did cost them a potential tying goal about five minutes in. The referee was on the far side of the net and could not see the loose puck, but when a team’s losing skid has reached a dozen, that’s how the breaks go.
Jake Sinclair answered with what proved to be the game winner for the Packers a couple of minutes later.
Adam Cavaleri caged both second-period goals to give Arnprior its 4-3 lead. Mitch Melanson, Peter Sweeney and Neal Ross canned others.
Nathan Siydock, Jesse Riopelle, Reid Broadhurst and Kyle Papai kept the Wolves close. Riopelle added two assists and Papai one.
The opening stanza featured numerous lead changes as the Wolves overcame an early 1-0 deficit to take a 2-1 lead on goals from Siydock and Riopelle.
After Sweeney drew Arnprior even, Broadhurst gave Renfrew a 3-2 edge with eight seconds remaining in the period after he beat Joel Grills, and practically ended up in the net with the puck and the Arnprior goaltender.
The Wolves could not connect again until the final 1:34 of the third period when Papai connected on a two-man advantage.
Ross iced the verdict when he flipped the puck into the short-side above a crouching Wolves netminder Robin Billingham’s right shoulder with 14 seconds remaining.
The Wolves outshot Arnprior 35-29. Each side scored three powerplay goals.
METCALFE 6, WOLVES 4
The Metcalfe Jets jumped into a 3-1 lead on the strength of two goals in the last seven minutes of the opening stanza en route to their matinee Sunday triumph at the Larry Robinson Arena.
The Wolves cut the deficit down to one goal a couple of times. A 13-minute stretch in the third period saw the Jets clinging to a 4-3 lead before Nick Straccini, with his second goal of the night, gave Metcalfe insurance when scoring the eventual game winner with 3:17 remaining.
Kyle Papai had two goals for the Wolves. Jesse Riopelle and Erik Mask added singles.
Robin Billingham faced 56 shots in the game. The Wolves fired 41 shots the way of Metcalfe netminder Chris Scrivens.
The Jets scored in one of 12 powerplay opportunities and the Wolves one in eight.
The Wolves host the Stittsville Royals Friday at 8 p.m. Renfrew’s last victory was a 5-4 spine-tingler over the Stittsville club.
Renfrew takes on the Valley Division-leading Carleton Place Kings in Lanark County Sunday at 1:20 p.m.
